Restoring Habitat and Reducing Flood Risk for Homes and Businesses
The Carmel River Floodplain Restoration and Environmental Enhancement Project (CRFREE) is a historic initiative to restore habitat and reduce flood risks for homes and businesses in the lower Carmel River watershed. The project will use nature-based green infrastructure to reclaim the floodplain in the south and divert water from developed areas north of the river.
Big Sur Land Trust is the largest landowner of the Carmel River FREE site, and portions of the project are also located on Palo Corona Regional Park and Carmel River State Beach.
